Where Island Life
Becomes Community
IsleConnect bridges isolation and belonging for island residents across Galway. Whether you have just arrived, returned after years away, or feel disconnected from local life, we offer real pathways into community — practical, cultural, and personal.
A Welcoming Door for Every Island Resident
Island living is remarkable — but it can also be isolating. Ferries don't always run. Neighbours aren't always close. Newcomers can struggle to find their footing, and long-term residents can quietly drift from community life. IsleConnect was founded precisely for those moments.
We are a Galway-based community social services organisation dedicated to reducing isolation and creating genuine belonging. We work alongside new island residents, people returning after time away, families settling into coastal life, and anyone who needs a trusted, locally rooted hand finding their place in island community.
Our programmes are community-led, respectful, and designed to meet people where they are — not where we think they should be.
Hands-On Support to Help You Find Your Place
From navigating local transport to building friendships that last, our integration services are built around the real, everyday challenges island residents face. We meet you in person, in your community, on your timeline.
Community Navigation
Our community navigators work one-to-one with new island residents and people returning after time away — helping them understand local services, connect with neighbours, and build the routines that turn a house into a home.
Relocation Support
Remote workers, young families, and professionals relocating to island communities get tailored guidance on everything from registering with local services to understanding ferry schedules and seasonal rhythms.
Peer Mentorship
We pair newcomers with experienced community members who understand island life from the inside — genuine connections, not formal appointments.
Mobility & Access
Practical support for residents with limited mobility or transport barriers, including coordinated travel to services, group outings, and home-visit outreach for those who cannot easily leave the island.
Community Participation
Supported introductions to local clubs, community councils, volunteer groups, and island organisations — so participation feels natural, not intimidating.
Celebrate, Create & Connect Through Island Culture
Our cultural calendar is the heartbeat of island community life. We bring people together through shared creativity, heritage, and the living traditions of island identity — for locals, newcomers, young and old alike.
Island Heritage Storytelling Sessions
Intergenerational evenings where long-time islanders share oral histories, folklore, and local legend with newer residents and young people.
Creative Arts & Craft Workshops
Open workshops in weaving, painting, printmaking, and traditional craft — led by local artists and welcoming all ability levels.
Island Food & Living Festivals
Seasonal celebrations of island food culture, traditional music, and locally grown produce — bringing hundreds of community members together.
Youth & Schools Cultural Exchange
School-linked programmes giving young islanders a living connection to heritage while welcoming the curiosity and energy they bring to community life.
Island Arts & Makers Showcase
Our flagship annual exhibition celebrating island creativity — a platform for local artists, makers, musicians, and craftspeople of every generation.
Practical Skills for a Confident Island Life
Our skills workshops are built around the real employment, digital, and life-skill needs of island residents — from first-time jobseekers to adults returning to work after years as caregivers.
We deliver all workshops locally, with island-appropriate timing that respects ferry schedules, family commitments, and seasonal work patterns. No commuting to the mainland. No waiting lists that stretch for months.

The Stories Behind the Numbers
Every statistic below is a person who found their footing on the island. Here is what they — and the organisations who referred them — have to say.
"I moved to the island from Poland during lockdown and honestly thought I'd made a terrible mistake. IsleConnect paired me with a community mentor within a week. Within two months, I had friends, I knew where everything was, and I felt genuinely at home. That's not nothing — that's everything."
"As a GP on the island, I refer patients here regularly. When someone comes in clearly struggling with loneliness or the stress of adjusting to island life, IsleConnect is my first call. Their community navigators do in three sessions what I cannot do in thirty."
"I came back to the island after fourteen years in Dublin. I thought I knew this place — but it had changed, and so had I. The peer group at IsleConnect gave me a way back in that I didn't know I needed. I'm now running the craft workshop on Thursday evenings."
"The digital skills workshop genuinely changed my day-to-day life. I'm 67, I didn't grow up with any of this, and I was terrified. But the facilitator was patient, practical, and never once made me feel foolish. Now I video call my grandchildren every Sunday without any help."
"We partnered with IsleConnect on a school heritage project last spring. The intergenerational event they organised brought three generations of island families together in one evening. Our students are still talking about the stories they heard. Genuinely remarkable work."
"After my husband passed, I didn't leave the house for three months. My daughter rang IsleConnect on my behalf. Within a week, a volunteer was calling in for tea. A month later, I was at the women's circle. This organisation kept me in the world when I wanted to leave it."

Island Communities
Rooted in Galway, Reaching Across the Islands
IsleConnect was founded by a small group of community workers who had watched, over years, the toll that island isolation takes on real people. Not abstractly — but in the faces of families who didn't know their neighbours, in elderly residents who hadn't spoken to anyone in days, and in newcomers who left because they never found a way in.
We are based at 10 Claddagh Road, Galway City — close to the water, close to the communities we serve. Our staff and volunteers include former island residents, community health workers, arts facilitators, and skills educators who share one conviction: that community is not something that happens automatically. It is something that must be built, tended, and protected.
Our approach is facilitative, not prescriptive. We do not arrive in a community telling people what they need. We listen first, design second, and always ensure that the people we support have a voice in shaping the services they receive.
Our programmes are shaped by the residents who use them, not by what is easiest for us to deliver.
We meet people with dignity — no judgement, no barriers, and no assumptions about what they need.
We design for diversity — disability, language, culture, age, and identity are not afterthoughts in our programmes.
Ready to Connect? We're Here.
Whether you want to join a programme, refer someone in need, partner on an event, or simply find out what's available — reach out. Every message is answered by a real person, usually within 24 hours.
